Methods are presented for design of laterally loaded piles; methods are based on concepts that deformations at working loads should not be excessive and that complete collapse of pile group should not occur even under most adverse conditions; lateral deflections are calculated using coefficient of subgrade reaction; ultimate lateral resistance is determined assuming that either lateral resistance of soil or ultimate strength of pile section has been exceeded; proposed design method is illustrated by numerical example.
