Mechanical anisotropies of laminated sedimentary rocks
Effects of bedding plane orientation on elastic constants and yield strengths of three laminated rocks (one sandstone, two shales) and one isotropic rock (limestone) were studied; directional dependence of elastic properties of rocks was experi- mentally evaluated using triaxial compression cell and auxiliary stress-strain measuring equipment; symmetry of Poisson's ratios within bedding plane suggested that horizontal isotropy exists, but bedding planes give rise to appreciable difference between properties in horizontal and vertical directions.
