Hydraulic studies of large penstock trifurcation
Hydraulic investigations of trifurcation of 23-ft diam penstock are presented; trifurcation that directs flow to three Francis turbines having combined power capacity of 247,050 kw with 12,000 cfs discharging may, on rare occurrences, pass to 18,000 cfs; in main penstock Reynold's number is approximately 9×107 maximum, with normal operating ranges of 6×107; recommendations concerning design and operation are made; studies include energy losses, pressures and expected shed vorticity from central tie-bar.
