Description of hydraulic prop manufactured by Dowty Mining Equipment, Ltd; prop setting and withdrawal described; props offer immediate resistance of 5 tons each which rises to 2 tons before 0.025-in. of roof lowering has taken place; bed separation is thus prevented and strata are held compact to give solid roof; application to continuous mining. (See also Iron and Coal Trades Rev v 161 n 4301 Aug 18 1950 p 349-51)
