How Portland contractor lays steel water main
Laying of approximately 4 1/2 mi of 36-in. diam 3/8-in. thick welded steel water main in 8-ft cut in various streets of Portland, Ore, was performed with new type of pavement breaker operating on triphammer principle; this procedure made possible high speed excavation; welded joints were tested with aid of compressed air so that imperfections were disclosed by leakage of air.
