Use of prestressed concrete in highway construction
Prestressing may be applied to concrete highways either to increase load bearing qualities and to omit joints, or to eliminate contraction cracking and use minimum of joints; experience with 400-ft long, 24-ft wide and 6-in. thick prestressed concrete road which was cast in four parts, there being only construction joints; prestress was applied by cables laid in diagonal mesh.
