Fundamental principle in soil mechanics
Clayey rocks older in age frequently show higher porosity than overlying younger formations; soil porosity appears to be determined by other factors besides load; effective pressure cannot possibly give idea as to magnitude of pressure experienced by rock, or of capillary pressure; from this viewpoint formula connecting cohesion with capillary pressure and friction coefficient given in textbooks is based on no reliable foundation. (In English.)
