New hammer guide permits driving piles without leads
To meet special conditions presented by emergency, calling for driving of steel bearing piles in bent on centers up to 36 ft, devices were developed on Erie, including pile pick-up and guide, which holds hammer securely on pile, permits driving with loose hammer line, and dispenses with need for leads with limited reach, and floating template to simplify and speed up accurate spotting of piles in each bent; devices are described.
