Dam was built on cavernous Mississippian limestone, from 1905 to 1913; inadequate foundation treatment and lack of realization of true conditions beneath dam resulted in serious leakage; attempts made to stop leaks, none successful until 4-yr repair program was undertaken by Tennessee Valley Authority, in 1940; most of caves were result of solution of shattered limestone along two small thrust faults. (See also - discussion n 8 Dec p 853)
