A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
During excavations of 900 level hoist chamber at Northern Rhodesian mine, use was made of special technique of prestressed support which calls for placing of high tensile cables into wall of excavation hanging; cables are tensioned by hydraulic jack and load imparted to them is transmitted into surrounding rock; this returns it to state of partial triaxial compression and makes it self-supporting; method is particularly suited to bad ground conditions with rock movement.
