Head frame at Vouters coal mine shaft, Lorraine Basin
Notable feature of 56 m high reinforced concrete structure is application of neoprene cushions under 4 pilasters supporting head frame; these 75 mm thick elastic cushions absorb soil deformation in case of mining subsidence and avoid transmission of excessive stresses and deformations to structure; in addition, system of flat vertical and lateral jacks permits raising and shifting pillars after subsidence and subsequent releveling of head frame by means of neoprene cushions.
