Possible causes of Vaiont Dam disaster in Northern Italy, on Oct 9, 1963 are presented; 312 million cu yd slide, mostly rock, was precipitated into reservoir creating 230 ft wave which took almost 3000 lives; 875-ft-high ultra-thin arch dam 11 ft thick at crest and 74 ft near base withstood forces estimated at 4 million tons without structural damage.
