Long tokyo monorail opens next week
Straddle-type monorail line, 8.2 mi long, provides 15-min trip between Tokyo International Airport and downtown Tokyo; permanently coupled electric cars run on hollow precast reinforced concrete I-beams, in elevated sectors, or in tunnels under airport and under water; power supplied to train by conductor rails attached to both sides of web of each I-beam; protective insulation plates are used on positive side of conductor rails in stations, sheds, tunnels and where clearance between rail and ground surface is 16 ft or less; grounding devices on negative conductor rails are in use at stations.
