Theory of tidal mixing proposed by Preddy forms basis for theory of maximum entropy mixing developed in terms of theory of Markov chains; three conservation laws are related to properties of Markov chain; estimate of appropriate mixing matrix is based on maximum entropy principle of statistical mechanics and information theory; comparison of equilibrium salinity intrusion data from Delaware River Model and theoretical predictions based on maximum entropy estimate indicate that theory of maximum entropy mixing is practical solution to problem of characterizing mixing process in estuary.
