Robert Hooke's water current meter, circa 1663
Water current meter described is shown to have been built in 1663 by R. Hooke (1635-1703); this is claimed to be earliest current meter in which use has been made of freely-rotating sensor with facilities for observing number of turns sensor made within measured period of time; features of current meter built by R.Woltman in about 1790, are shown to be similar to those of Hooke's meter; several other velocity-measuring devices conceived between time of Hooke and Woltman are described.
