Oxygen relationships in intermittent sand filtration
Model for processes in intermittent sand filtration is described and expression for oxygen transfer assumes that aerobic bacterial activity within sand or soil matrix is limited by oxygen deficiency while surface is ponded; aerobic activity is resumed, but oxygen penetration is limited; condition leads to large variations in concentration of certain contaminants in percolate; analyses of soil moisture in field studies and of effluent from laboratory sand columns substantiated model; results can be applied to operation of existing facilities and in interpreting data from pilot-plant studies.
