Problem of how to ventilate 10.14 mi long highway tunnel built through Swiss St. Gotthard massif is discussed; design that proposes only two ventilating shafts, plus ventilating tunnel paralleling highway tunnel is compared to that which proposes four ventilating shafts; it is shown how extra tunnel of first design could be used in emergency; second design was bid 4 million dollars cheaper than first design.
