Tunnel excavating system keeps ventilation costs down
How Norwegian approach to shoveling out rock in country's longest tunnel is solving ventilation problem; project in Norway involves tunnel of 21 mi long which has area of 320 sq ft and is situated 2600 ft above sea level; solution is to use diesel locomotives to haul rail-mounted cars part way in and out of tunnel; locomotives haul train of cars through tunnel, halting at distance of 100 to 400 yd from face; at this point, track branches so that pair of parallel tracks run up to face itself.
