Safety factors and probability in structural design
Alternative formulation of structural safety is proposed, and its associated basis for design of safe structures is described; proposed formulation combines certain aspects of conventional method of design with extended reliability theory; it is shown how major shortcomings and difficulties previously associated with existing methods, including critical problems of choosing acceptable probability level for design, can be more easily resolved by means of proposed method; approach is illustrated with examples.
