Monte Carlo study of structural safety
Probabilistic concepts of structural safety are reviewed; Monte Carlo simulation technique is described that can be used to determine cumulative distribution functions of stochastic variables including ultimate strength, factor and region of safety; in worked example, variability in strength of axially loaded short reinforced concrete column is investigated using Monte Carlo technique and results are compared with closed form solution; short cut methods of selective sampling are described.
