Influence of details on fatigue behavior of structures
Behavior of structure subjected to cyclic loads was studied; data from tests of butt- and fillet-welded joints, beam details, and riveted and bolted joints in base materials of common classes of structural steels are presented and analyzed; test data generated in laboratory provide basis for establishment of allowable stresses and development of proper design techniques to prevent fatigue failures in structures; methods were developed to improve fatigue strength of structures containing critical details by minimizing stress concentration or favorably altering residual stresses.
