New plant houses in Royal Botanic Gardens at Edinburgh (Scotland)
Note on new plant house and orchid house of design of unusual shape; plant house is 18.30 m span, 4.57 m high to eaves and 8.54 m to apex of roof and is 128 m long; orchid house has 15.25 m span and 30.50 m length; two houses are placed at right angles to each other and are connected by linking reinforced concrete bridge; design of both houses is similar, consisting of basic portal frame which is lightened in weight by suspension system; details of structural design are given; structural steelwork is high tensile to BS968 and is hot dipped galvanized.
