Rolled plates strengthened by heat treatment; strength properties of type St3 mild steel can be greatly improved by heat treatment consisting of quenching from 890 to 920 C or quenching followed by tempering at 500 C; it also makes steel less sensitive to stress raisers and less susceptible to strain aging or age hardening and lowers transition temperature; after this treatment weldability of St3 steel is satisfactory; 15% metal saving achieved by using this material as substitute for hot rolled steel.
