Knife-line corrosion caused by titanium carbides; structural analysis of overheated titanium-stabilized steels and oxidation of titanium carbides at potentials corresponding to corrosion of these steels in nitric acid, indicated that dendritic titanium carbide, precipitated on grain boundaries after overheating to high temperatures, are main reasons of knife-line attack; structural changes detected in overheated steels, heat treated to eliminate susceptibility to knife-line attack, show that processing methods proposed have limited effect only.
