Intergranular cracks and flakes in steel castings
Flakes normally originate and grow from intergranular cracks, always appearing to surround them; after development of intergranular crack has ceased because temperature is too low, grain boundaries are strengthened and, under influence of cumulative structural stresses resulting from austenite transformation to intermediate products stress, peaks are set up at extremities of cracks; structural stresses combined with hydrogen cause further disruption of steel through body of primary austenite grains.
