Volume change characteristics of unsaturated clay
Compression tests under controlled effective stress paths show stress path independence of volumetric strain and degree of saturation; stress path dependency appears to be caused by reversal in direction of saturation; collapse mechanism is controlled by potentially unstable structure, high applied stress and high suction pressure; compression behavior is treated in terms of separate components of applied stress and suction pressure, and for one-dimensional compression; stress-strain relationships for clay are stated.
