Construction advances rapidly on Melbourne Trunk Sewer
Shaft construction and tunnel boring operations of Melbourne's South-Eastern Trunk Sewer; 11 shafts in 10 1/2 mi rock tunnel section, with one exception, are 18 ft lined diameter, and varying from 60 to 225 ft deep; Robbins tunnel boring machine with 12 ft 8 in. diam cutting head, adjustable to 14 ft 5 in. diam was used to excavate rock at three diameters required; 11 ft diam cutting head is to be fitted to bore section 4 upstream from main shaft; tunnel in Silurian rock is supported with 4×3 in. steel ribs at 3 ft 6 in. centers with welded mesh "lagging" between; ribs are expanded into contact with rock periphery by 20-ton jacks.
