Construction of intercepting sewer in Melbourne, Australia to be connected with existing 6-ft-diam brick sewer; design of special steel expanding flume that made possible connection without interrupting flow; shaft was sunk 90 ft below grade and opening cut into existing sewer; flume, suspended rigidly from steel support system to prevent transmission of weight to sewer, was lowered into position; ends of flume were extended and "Linatex" seals at ends inflated hydraulically to fill annuli between ends and sewer wall; make-up water tank, elevated in shaft 40 ft above flume, maintained constant pressure in seals.
