Iron-59 as solids tracer in aqueous suspensions
Radioactive tracer is introduced for following movement of particulate matter in-sewage treatment processes; by combining radio-tracer with dye tracers, hydraulic characteristics of several aeration tanks and final clarifiers were investigated; particulate matter was found to travel through sewage suspension faster than liquid portion; center-feed radial flow type final clarifiers indicate appreciable short circuiting of mixed liquor to return sludge outlet; investigations of aeration tanks designed for plug flow indicated that hydraulic conditions ranged from near plug flow to those approaching complete mixing.
