Energy criterion for strength of rock in polyaxial compression
It is generally accepted that strength of rock is determined by presence of flaws, usually known as Griffith cracks; however, various criteria based on this and other concepts fail to describe adequately strength of rock under general system of polyaxial compressive stresses; in this paper new criterion is proposed, based on additional energy stored around Griffith cracks due to sliding of crack surfaces over each other; predictions of strength based on this concept are in general agreement with acknowledged behavior of rock under uniaxial and triaxial stress systems.
