Influence of spherical head size and specimen diameters on uniaxial compressive strength of rocks
Uniaxial compressive strength of rock is usually determined in laboratory from cylindrical samples that vary in diamater from 5/8 to 8 in., using spherically seated compression head of unspecified size; Bureau of Mines conducted series of tests to determine influence of spherical head sizes and specimen diameters themselves on uniaxial compressive strength; analysis of data shows that spherical head size does not significantly affect uniaxial compressive strength of cylindrical rock samples but diameter of rock specimens does.
