Pavement cracking. Causes and some preventive measures
Pavement cracking problem was investigated with respect to deep seated movements and from standpoint of "shrinkage cracking" due to inherent properties of roadbuilding materials; laboratory tests involving migration of lime into dried and cracked specimens were performed; results indicated that use of proper percent solids in lime slurry, recycling of treatment and reconsolidation all contribute to effectiveness of lime's ability to reduce volume change and increase strength in unmixed cracked clay; recommendations are made for use of water and lime to prevent deep seated swelling.
