Methods are suggested for material selection, moisture control, and compaction or treatment of soils and materials to assure volume stability and uniform support for concrete pavements; various environments are considered and methods of subgrade preparation are outlined; base and sub-base functions are defined and adaptability of types and sub-bases discussed; placement of materials for sub-base moisture control was emphasized in shoulder design.
