Comparison of design and construction of dry docks at immingham and jarrow
Two new drydocks, built concurrently at Immingham and at Jarrow, England are described; both docks are 600 ft long, designed to accommodate vessels up to 24,000 tons dw, and are complete with pumping machinery and auxiliary facilities; at Immingham walls were of heavy reinforced-concrete construction, while at Jarrow they consisted of steel-sheet piling below reinforced-concrete superstructure tied back by raking piles; influence of ground conditions at each site on design, methods of construction, and cost of work, is illustrated.
