Theory is developed for load carried at large deflections by tensile membrane action of uniformly loaded rectangular slabs with edges restrained against all translation; it is assumed that reinforcement acts as plastic membrane; on comparison with test results theory is shown to be conservative; load carried by tensile membrane action is found to be considerable and for heavily reinforced slabs it can exceed ultimate flexural strength.
