Connections in precast concrete structures -- Bearing strength of column heads
Development of criteria for ultimate bearing strength of concrete column heads supporting precast beams; tests conducted on 38 plain concrete and 185 reinforced columns subjected to loads distributed across their width through steel bearing plates, indicate that lateral reinforcement must be used to prevent longitudinal splitting of column; bearing strength is function of concrete compressive strength, width of bearing plates, distance of bearing plates from column edges, amount of lateral reinforcement in top of column, and ratio between horizontal and vertical components of applied loads.
