Lightweight aggregates
Shales, clays, and loess in Iowa were tested and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing light weight aggregate by commercial rotary-kiln or sintering methods; preliminary testing was conducted in muffle furnace; rotary-kiln tests were conducted in 16 in. by 14 ft rotary-kiln; concrete cylinders and cubes were tested to determine qualities of aggregate; 3 samples made suitable light weight aggregate by rotary-kiln methods and 2 by sintering.
