Experimental Longwall mining in Pennsylvania anthracite mine -- 1
In effort to establish highly productive mechanized mining system for anthracite beds pitching between 10 and 20°, for which conventional mobile equipment is not adaptable, Bureau carried out experiment in longwall mining using Anderton-type drum cutter loader and friction-type yielding steel roof supports; roof-support system proved to be inadequate for breaking overhanging roof at break line supports, with result that roof broke over solid coal.
