Utilization of inclines and active underground channels in inland waterways
New type ship lift consisting of lock chamber built on wheel-supported carriage that moves along incline is described; device accommodating 1350 ton barges is being built at Ronquiere (Belgium); difference in water levels to be covered by lift is 68 m, weight of water-filled chamber is 5200 tons; moving barges through underground canals by means of flow created by difference in water levels is also discussed.
