U.S. starts anew on old canal
Barge canal 185 mi long will cut 610 mi off open-water route around Key West and 360 mi off Okeechobee waterway route across southern Florida; 107-mi stretch from Yankeetown to Palatka represents virtually all of construction; only minor modifications, mostly straightening out of curves, will be necessary on 78-mi, 12-ft-deep St. Johns River channel; canal with locks, instead of sea-level waterway, was chosen to avoid any interference with groundwater levels.
