British open stayed girder bridge
Great Britain's first major stayed girder bridge, over River Usk; conditions required 43 ft minimum clearance over river, 5% maximum allowable approach grade, and deck less than 5 ft thick; main span comprises number of prefabricated welded steel boxes bolted together at site, with sidewalks cantilevered out on both sides; cellular deck is 4 ft 6 in. deep, and is covered with bituminous material, 4 in. of reinforced concrete and 1.5 in. of asphaltic mixture; deck is supported by locked-coil steel wire ropes 3 in. in diam passed through slots in 170-ft-high hollow concrete towers.
