Long span prestressed concrete bridges utilizing precast elements
Use of precast concrete segments, erected, and prestressed, offers practicable, rapid and economical way to build long span bridges, provided design of bridge is integrated with construction and erection methods; special techniques to ensure monolithic nature of completed structure and to permit integration of design with erection procedure include -- making joints, producing composite action with cast-in-place concrete, stage prestressing, employing external tendons, negative-moment tendons encased in deck concrete, light weight concrete, concentrated tendons, and varying cross section of girders so as to locate heavier segments where they may be most easily erected.
