Capacity of friction piles in varved clay increased by electro-osmosis
Big Pic River bridge, in Canada, was founded over 300 ft of soft varved clay and loose silt deposits on short, steel H section friction piles within upper clay; electro-osmotic treatment was applied in area of bridge pier and abutment pile groups; tests carried out to determine increase in pile capacity and variation in piezometric levels in general area both during and after treatment showed overall effect of electroosmosis was to increase pile capacity. Before 5th Int Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Eng, Paris, July 1961.
