New 1000-seat amphitheater for engineering college in Paris is being built beneath campus courtyard; 108-ft diam, 36-ft-high underground chamber is egg-shaped to distribute weight over larger area in order to avoid deep foundation piers necessary because of abandoned mine tunnels under site; cellular curved floor was cast on grade out to base of concave walls; concrete anchorages were cast around rim of floor to buttress shoring supporting wall formwork.
