Building new column inside old 24-story structure found necessary to install new air conditioning equipment and elevators in 24-story American Surety Building, New York City; 18 in. below each floor beam, section of I-beam was welded between steel plates to serve as shelf against which jacks could react during jacking operation; jacks for all floors were operated simultaneously.
