Design of spiral spillway chutes
Where conditions require construction of spillway channel around end of dam, it is often possible to reduce costs considerably by designing channel with horizontal curvature for conveyance of water at high (supercritical) velocities; bottom of such chute must be superelevated to force water to follow curved path; such superelevation substantially reduces depth of excavation which would otherwise be required; procedure in design described.
