Timber towers of California suspension bridge replaced with steel
Plan evolved, in order to maintain service on bridge during repairs, was to set shafts with head ends outside timber head blocks, shift saddles from timber to steel, remove timber, then rock steel shafts into place, and rivet K-frame bracing and steel towers.
