Unlined tunnels of southern California Edison Company
Design, construction, and operating experience with 11 unlined power tunnels sited in granitic rock in Sierra Nevada Range in Central California are summarized; tunnels vary in age from 5 to 50 years and vary in bore from 7 to 24 ft; advantages and disadvantages of unlined tunnels are compared with those for lined tunnels, and need for careful pregeologic studies is emphasized; results of tunnel friction loss tests are presented, and effect of invert treatment on hydraulic and structural performance is reviewed.
