21-mile, 60-inch water line built for attractive price
Construction of raw water transmission line from Cheney Reservoir pumping station to Wichita, Kan completed in Nov 1964, is described; feature of project was completion of more than 111,000 ft of 60-in. diam prestressed concrete water main for less than 4,400,000 dollars; in process of pipe installation, excavation was made by ladder type trenching machine with adjustable side-cutters; machine cut round-bottomed trench with sloping sides, approximately 12 ft wide at top and 8.5 ft at bottom; highloader, working in ditch was equipped with special bucket having rounded section to match pipe contour.
