Rigid water column theory for uniform gate closure
Inelastic approximation, applied to simple water-hammer problems, is shown generally to yield lower values of maximum head rise than those given by Allievi's solution, except when gate closure is rapid; two approaches agree when static head in feet is numerically less than 50 times initial velocity in feet per second and closure period exceeds time for eight pressure cycles.
